Lidget Green Memorial Gardens
The space will operate as a recreational and productive ‘pocket park’ for the immediate residents and local area and provide an open public focal point for the wider Lidget Green and Scholemoor Areas and visitors to the local urban centre: the soft landscaping will provide a community orchard and nuttery with planting beds forming growing space for herbs and vegetables for use by the local residents and visitors alike; the areas of hardscaping will provide opportunities for casual and informal gathering with seating etc. to animate the space.
There are currently no public open access ‘pocket park’ areas within the Scholemoor or Lidget Green areas that provide opportunities for inclusive informal small scale recreation, community growing space or that provide the opportunity for communities to express and explore memorialisation in an outdoor open space setting.
The garden will also act as a living memorialisation space to memorialise those from the area who have been involved with or affected by past and current global wars and conflicts. Fields in Trust Centenary Field Status has been sought and secured with the site now designated and known as the ‘Lidget Green Memorial Garden’ (web ref: http://www.fieldsintrust.org/Lidget-Green ) with the green now protected in perpetuity as public open space by legal deed. A ceremony by the Lord Mayor of Bradford together with local school children was held in April where a dedication plaque was unveiled together with the planting of a Sweet Chestnut tree, the first tree of the planting which is proposed.
The project will initially be delivered with direct community Involvement as the planting of the fruit and nut trees will be carried out by local school children and community groups coming together at proposed planting events.
As the planting element of the space reaches full maturity in the future it will increase opportunities for community involvement with the harvesting of the fruits and nuts, allowing the produce to processed with events such as ‘Apple Days’ etc.
The project has been designed to consist of hard and soft elements that minimise future maintenance requirements whilst maximising community participation in the initial planting phases and the green elements future maintenance. Initial delivery of the project will present the community with a complete turn-key space of high quality materials in a robust form reducing future maintenance and where possible designing out possible criminal damage undesirable use of the space. The future maintenance will enhance provision for the various community groups to participate in the active management of their immediate local environment.
Lidget Green Community Partnership organised the Dedication Ceremony on 13th April 2016 to erect the stone and plant the tree for this Memorial Garden Project. The Lord Mayor of Bradford Cllr Joanne Dodds attended this event and children from Lidget Green Primary School carried out a litter-pick before the event.
